On 22 March, to mark World Water Day, the United Nations published its annual World Water Development Report 2026 (WWDR 2026). World Water Day 2026 Celebration and Launch of the UN World Water The document has featured in the main international media, not only because it confirms that water will remain one of the great global challenges, but because it introduces a new element that directly affects companies, territories and industries.
As usual, World Water Day combines a global awareness campaign with a technical report by UNESCO. This year the international campaign carries the slogan “Where water flows, equality grows”, highlighting that access to safe water promotes health, opportunity and social equity. It is a powerful and necessary message, centred on the human dimension of this essential resource.
WWDR 2026, however, takes a complementary view, more focused on the economy: the interdependence between water, energy and security. This is the central point that affects industry and European SMEs, and that will shape competitiveness in the years ahead.

But this year's report introduces a completely new angle: the water–energy–ESG interdependence, a triangle that will become one of the main factors of industrial resilience and competitiveness of the decade.
Water and energy: a dependency that already shapes industry
WWDR 2026 focuses on a key message: water security cannot be guaranteed without also guaranteeing energy security, and vice versa.
On the one hand, energy generation —whether thermal, nuclear or renewable— consumes significant volumes of water for cooling, thermal processes, cleaning and treatment. On the other, the entire water cycle —abstraction, pumping, treatment and reuse— requires energy, a great deal of energy.
This creates a very fragile link, particularly in territories such as Catalonia, where droughts recur and industrial energy demand is high. According to WWDR 2026, this interdependence will become increasingly critical, and extreme events will multiply operational risks for companies.
It is an uncomfortable message, but an increasingly real one: when water fails, energy also wobbles. And when energy becomes more expensive, managing water becomes harder.
Direct impact on industry: the triple risk of the 2026–2035 decade
The report identifies three trends that will fully affect industrial SMEs:
1. Water-energy stress zones
There are territories where low water availability, high energy demand and intense industrial activity coincide. Catalonia and other regions of southern Europe are among them. This means greater vulnerability to cuts, restrictions or cost increases.
2. More frequent extreme events
Heatwaves, structural droughts or irregular rainfall can disrupt operations that depend on cooling, thermal processes or water treatment systems.
3. Competition between water uses
The report warns of a scenario in which municipalities, agriculture and industry will compete more directly for a resource that is already limited. In such situations, industry tends to find itself in a lower priority position.
Water moves squarely onto the ESG agenda: from impact to governance

Water pressure is no longer only an environmental question, it is a complete ESG issue:
- E (environmental): consumption, efficiency, risk zones.
- S (social): responsible management towards local communities.
- G (governance): planning, control and transparency.
The ESRS, and specifically the E3 standard (Water and Marine Resources), require large companies to report detailed water data. This means that the whole value chain —and therefore many SMEs— will have to supply verified, reliable information.
And EFRAG's VSME , currently being defined to make this process easier for SMEs, will include specific indicators on water, energy and resource dependence. That is why this year's report arrives at the perfect moment: SMEs will need to demonstrate that they have control over their water management.
WWDR 2026 matters for industry
Catalonia is one of the European territories that WWDR 2026 identifies as particularly vulnerable. The combination of recurrent drought, significant industrial consumption, dependence on water for thermal and cooling processes and growing energy pressure makes the risk real for SMEs that lack robust plans.
In this respect the message is clear: water-energy resilience becomes a competitive asset.
WWDR 2026 does not only sound the alarm, it also sets out realistic actions fully applicable to SMEs, such as:
- understanding your own water and energy dependence: defining critical processes, risks and existing alternatives.
- carrying out an integrated water-energy audit: a joint audit that reflects the reality of the resource.
- defining a water resilience plan: measures to operate safely during drought episodes.
- preparing ESG information for VSME and CSRD
- seeing water as an asset, not a cost: companies that manage water well will have an advantage in tenders, value chains and reputation.
