Biomethane: The financial asset behind thermal decarbonisation
    Marc Oliva Carbonell

A few days ago, in one of our articles, we analysed the role of biogas and biomethane as indispensable tools for the thermal transition. Biogas and Biomethane: the keys to decarbonisation. With the Guarantees of Origin (GdO) system fully consolidated in Spain, biomethane has ceased to be merely an engineering solution and has become a financial and strategic asset for industry.

If photovoltaics and demand flexibility are the answer to the electricity challenges, biomethane is the key to shielding the profit and loss account from fossil gas volatility.

    1. The value of avoided decarbonisation (ETS – Emissions Trading System)

The CO2 emission allowance market (EU ETS) EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) – Climate Action – European Commission has ceased to be a concern exclusive to the large utilities and now directly affects medium-sized industry. With the progressive reduction of free allowance allocations, the cost of burning fossil natural gas has become a first-order financial risk.

Every MWh of fossil natural gas replaced by biomethane reduces the emission allowance bill linearly (direct saving). In heat-intensive sectors, this translates into an immediate saving on «carbon taxes».

Companies that demonstrate a real reduction in direct emissions through biomethane gain access to far more favourable credit conditions (green finance). Biomethane acts today as a certificate of solvency before a banking sector that already penalises activities with high fossil dependence with higher interest rates.

    2. Synergy with the Digital Product Passport (DPP)

With the new Digital Product Passport, carbon footprint traceability is now mandatory for many sectors. Digital Product Passport. Biomethane allows industries with high heat demand (chemicals, ceramics, food) to reduce drastically the emissions impact of their final product, securing their presence in international supply chains that no longer tolerate fossil carbon. Without biomethane, many products would fall outside green public procurement standards or the supply chains of the large multinationals.

    3. The Bio-Hub model: from «Waste Management» to «Resource Generation»

This year, the approach breaks with the linear view of the biogas plant. «Waste treatment works» are no longer designed; instead, bio-industrial refineries are, maximising every molecule.

Biogenic CO2 capture: The upgrading process generates a stream of CO2 of very high purity. Instead of releasing it, this CO2 is recovered for industrial uses (food or refrigeration), turning a by-product into a new revenue stream.

Precision fertilisation: Digestate has been transformed into a strategic resource estrategia-catalana-digestat. Through separation and enrichment processes, we produce tailor-made biofertilisers. In a context of unstable chemical fertiliser prices, digestate offers cost stability that is key for the primary sector linked to the agri-food industry.

    4. The maturity of the Guarantees of Origin market

The consolidation of the Guarantees of Origin (GdO) System has been the great catalyst. This system makes it possible to separate the environmental attribute of the gas from its physical molecule, enabling flexible and auditable decarbonisation.

Biomethane Virtual PPA: An industrial company can contract the supply of a biomethane plant located kilometres away. The gas flows through the grid, but the «Guarantee of Origin» travels digitally to the company’s balance sheet.

Simplified auditing: These GdO are the definitive tool for Compliance departments. They are traceable, immutable certificates recognised by the EU, which guarantees maximum transparency before customers and shareholders.

    Conclusion:

Biomethane is not an isolated piece. It is the perfect ally of photovoltaics: while the panels reduce electricity costs, biomethane removes thermal fossil dependence.

Today, it is not the time to ask whether biomethane is viable, but to ask what the opportunity cost is of not having started the transition already. The energy independence of your plant depends on the ability to turn today’s waste into tomorrow’s high-efficiency fuel.
